The Web We Want

The Web We Want is a project by browser creators to collect feedback from the web development and design community on how to improve the web experience. Stephanie Stimac writes a great article titled, “Building the Web We Want,” which summaries an overview of the project.

Web Collaborative:

She describes The Web We Want as an open initiative for the web dev community to tell browser vendors what they should focus on building or fixing. The Web We Want’s web site lists a collaborative consisting of members from Mozilla, Microsoft, Samsung, W3C, Igalia and even Google that are all listening for ways to improve the web platform.

Multiple Ways to Pitch Ideas:

Submissions for ideas the community “wants” are accepted directly on their homepage through a web form as well as a list of currently submitted “wants” are provided for review. The second way to submit feedback is at community-focused panel sessions at conferences and meetups across the world, all of which are listed on the events section of The Web We Want’s site. At these events, time is provided for a small amount of audience members to pitch their “wants” ideas to a panel of experts for the chance to win prizes. Rounds consist of five minutes and can be either live on stage or recorded onto YouTube (or similar).

Thoughts:

I think this is a great collaborative project between the web development community and browser companies. This is a great avenue for suggestions to be pitched and heard. I really enjoy the in-person aspect of idea pitching to judges and the audience. It helps to keep the conferences and discussions entertaining after a full day of talks. The Internet itself is a collaborative project and only if we all work together, we can build a better Internet or The Web We Want.
